Hi,

I am trying to install exim4, but no success so far. Downloading the packages
works well (-config, -base, -daemon-light), but exim4-config does not get set
up:

exim4-config (4.84-8) wird eingerichtet ...
2015-09-01 19:32:43 Exim configuration error in line 704 of
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp:
group mail was not found
2015-09-01 19:32:43 Exim configuration error in line 704 of
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp:
group mail was not found
2015-09-01 19:32:43 Exim configuration error in line 704 of
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp:
group mail was not found
exim: could not open panic log - aborting: see message(s) above

I found others, having the same problem, who could solve it by changing
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp line 664

from group = mail
to group = 8

But unfortunately that change has no effect on my problem. Now, I don't know
how to proceed. Would be great if someone could help to get around this.

Thanks
Carsten

Hello,

as the error message clearly states your system is lacking the group
"mail". Have you any idea why?

Hi, yes I understand that group mail is not found during the set-up of the
package. Anyway, it exists.
This typically happens when /etc/nsswitch.conf is misconfigured or the
/etc/group file was corrupted in some weird way.
Greetings
Marc
I used "grpck" to check the /etc/group file. No errors were reported.
I replaced my nsswitch.conf file with the default one (out of package base-
files, which was also not much of a difference). Then I tried again. The problem
stays the same.

Regards
Carsten
